In order to make sure that you are getting the right kitchen island, you need to understand that they tend to be better suited to certain shapes of kitchen, such as ones that are designed in a G, U or L shapes. If your kitchen is on the small side, you may regret installing an island, as it is something that can restrict your movement around your kitchen, instead you should opt for a mobile kitchen cart or butcher block.
Maximize natural light by having windows and skylights, and keep kitchen wall surfaces light in color to reflect daylight. Custom kitchen islands work great by using pendant or recessed fixtures to direct light onto the kitchen island and other work areas. Electrical codes will likely require that electrical outlets be located on the sides of fixed kitchen islands, not on the top, to prevent electrical shock.
If your kitchen island contains an oven or cooking top, then it makes sense to install an overhead extractor hood in order to eliminate smoke and odors. If it's going to feature a sink, then you need to install a sink that is big enough and deep enough for you to wash your large pots and pans, and you can even add a waste disposal unit and even something such as a dishwasher.
